1. Sequencing the Salmon Genome: A Deliberative Public Consultation

Event: Held in November 2008

Event Site: http://www.salmongenetalk.com/

Summary: In BC, it is difficult to find a group or individual who does not have a strong opinion on the subject of salmon. Current efforts towards funding a sequencing of the full salmon genome present a critical point for advancing scientific knowledge and for developing a greater understanding of the social dynamics surrounding the topic of salmon. The sequencing can be seen as having strong symbolic value and thus can crystallize the values underlying opinions on the subject, as well as specific interest in such areas as aquaculture and conservation efforts. The Centre for Applied Ethics at the University of British Columbia planned and executed this public engagement event on the topic of salmon genomics through its GE3LS Arch and cGRASP projects. The question presented to participants focused on sequencing a salmon genome. The CSJP helped to support and ultimately analyze the results of the project.
